Book Recommendation: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

“In some Native languages the term for plants translates to “those who take care of us.”

This book has very little to do with landscape design theory, but more specifically, regards our practices and relationship to nature.  Each chapter is a different story, lesson or research account that will guide one’s spirit home to Mother Nature. Out of all of the books I have read, this information has grounded me to our history as a species amongst species.

After listening to Robin Kimmerer’s book for the second time, I yearn for more.  What I got from this book is that our historic relationship to the land was based on reciprocity, respect and gratitude.  Our current lack of connection to the land and the natural world is the reason we must take immediate, drastic action to heal the planet.   I hope that I can borrow the wisdom of Ms. Kimmerer and other Indigenous Peoples and share that sacred knowledge in all of my practices.

If you are anything like me and you have a hard time sitting and reading, purchase the audiobook.  Robin Kimmerer’s voice is soothing and hearing her stories in her own voice and enriched with her spirit, sets the mood for connection and authenticity.
